Kenzo FW 22’

NIGO’S debuted collection, transporting KENZO into a new era.

Following his appointment as artistic director late last year, NIGO recently made his debut for KENZO with the luxury French fashion house’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection for women and men. Serving as the first Japanese designer at the helm of the house since founder Kenzo Takada, the streetwear legend delivered a “real-to-wear” expression that combines KENZO’s heritage with contemporary codes.

The collection entire continued Kenzo Takada’s combination of Japanese and costume traditions with NIGO’s penchant for Americana through a Japanese lens. Moreover, the soundtrack was “I Know NIGO”, featuring A$AP Rocky, Kid Cudi, Pharrell Williams, Pusha T, Teriyaki Boyz, Tyler, the Creator and Lil Uzi Vert.

The newly appointed artistic director reinvented the KENZO archive to unite and transcend both culture and conventional dress codes. In his “real-to-wear” showcase, men’s and women’s styles combine tailoring and workwear to break down the barriers between formal, sports and streetwear with a touch of unisex flair.

The incredible pieces in the line merge the artistic director’s upbringing and career with the heritage of Takada’s transcending cultural and conventional dress codes. The collection itself featured 60 looks that all brought Takada’s original vision into the present day. For instance, the signature poppy print reemerged on oversized shirts, jackets, and vests, as well as flowing maxi skirts and dresses.

However, the rest of the collection played into today’s trends, such as matching sets and featuring a pink, yellow, and green floral doodle print emblazoned on a jacket and pants. Likewise, the poppy motif appeared in a light blue shade on a navy jacket and pants. There was also an oversized styling, specifically voluminous knits, jackets, and coveralls. In simply words, Nigo’s first collection for Kenzo was an incredible start for the new creative director. By honouring the house’s traditions and playing into the popular styles of the present, Nigo established a strong foundation for himself at this longstanding French house. Moreover, his A-list guest was perfect and, we can’t say that we are not excited to see what comes next at Kenzo.
