French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, founder of the eponymous fashion house Jacquemus, is well-known for his off-calender fashion shows – a lavender field in the South of France, a beach in Hawaii – and this season he lured the fashion pack to an actual mine.

For Fall/Winter 2022-2023, the brand unveiled its “Le Papier” runway show at the implausibly elegant Salin of Camargue in the South of France – a perfect backdrop for the pieces presented by the brand. The designer also used his cinematic eye to create an ethereal display against the moonscape of the salt flats in the Camargue region. With the dramatic relief and bright light, it was a selfie dream. “The last collections were very Pop,” designer Simon Porte Jacquemus wrote in a recent Instagram story, “I now go back to something more poetic.”

I started working on the collection with the obsession to restart from nothing, like a white page,” Jacquemus said after the show. The two references were paper – hence the title of the collection, “Le Papier” – and sculptor Alberto Giacometti, which tracked perfectly as the models were silhouetted crossing the stark white landscape.

This season, the young sensualist presented his latest collection, emphasizing on the artisanal exploration of natural materials and displaying the ingenious imagination of Jacquemus in a comprehensive harmony.

The theme of the Le Papier exhibition on French paper was white. The chalk paint used by designers was not just a trend, it had a wider meaning, associated with the concept of a blank sheet of paper, symbolizing a new life that can be written and dyed.

Models descended one by one from the top of the sun-bleached mountains until they were at eye level with the show’s guests. Not to mention, an exclusive front row seating including Victoria Beckham, Jorja Smith, Bretman Rock, Nathy Peluso, and many more.

The show began with a duo of models who danced as they presented the first of the 61 looks. From then, the models continued, presenting crisp white gowns with sheer materials, deep khaki and sandy cargo pants, brown and cream tailoring, and blue checked outerwear.

Throughout the show, we could see pure white tone pieces, which paid homage to Simon Porte Jacquemus’ childhood: the designer took us back to Provence’s central colours and fabrics, to a bygone era, to the memories of his grandmother Liline and their shared nostalgic passion for things of the past.
